Divine Inspiration

I might offend a few people with this post, excite a few others, and probably confuse a few also, but oh well. I am member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, "the only true and living church with whom the Lord is well pleased" (D&C 1:30). I know this to be completely and wholly true. I am a passionate person and my faith and beliefs have made me the strong-willed person I am today and for that I am grateful. Recently, Elder Russell M. Nelson, one of the Twelve Apostles, wrote an article in the Ensign about abortion. If any of you haven't read it, it is amazing. I can't tell you how long I cried after reading this.
Elder Nelson states, "When the controversies about abortion are debated, 'individual right of choice' is invoked as though it were the one supreme virtue. That could only be true if but one person were involved.d The rights of any one individual do not allow the rights of another individual to be abused... A woman's choice for her own body does not include the right to deprive her baby of life and a lifetime of choices that her child would make." There are extreme circumstances in which abortion can be considered, but it should still be prayerfully and thoughtfully considered before any action should take place.
So, why am I so passionate about this? Well, I am a mother and as such have been blessed to see my little girl, Keilah, grown and progress. The fact that I had the opportunity to give birth to a child and now 17 months later see her progress into a toddler has been the ultimate gift from my Father in Heaven.
There is another reason why I have decided to take such a very strong stand and finally voice my opinion about abortion and "rights" as well...

This was taken almost 2 weeks ago. The little bean-looking spot in the middle of the big black spot is a fetus. This means I am almost 8 weeks pregnant with our second child. I am really excited and can't wait to get over morning sickness ;). When I was at the doctor's having my exam, he asked if I wanted to have any prenatal tests done. I asked him why they were given. He said that they could determine whether or not a fetus would have any defects and then action could be taken afterward. I declined these tests because 1. I don't want to pay for them and 2. I would love this child no matter what. The doctor then proceeded to tell me that most babies with Downs Syndrome are born to women under the age of 35. I thought and then asked, "Well, isn't the chance greater for women over the age of 35?" The doctor said, "Yes, the chance is greater for women over 35, but more are born to younger women because they don't opt for an abortion after the tests have been administered." My heart broke then and there.

After this conversation we did an ultrasound and the picture above was taken. The amazing thing is that my baby's heart was beating under six weeks of gestation. UNDER SIX WEEKS!!!! Some women don't even know they're pregnant yet! I could see it's heart beating and everything. How in the world could someone abort something that has a beating heart and blood flowing through its veins at such a beginning period of growth? I left the doctor's office and sat in my car and cried for the gift I had been given.

Nate and I are thrilled to be having another baby and are eager for the weeks, months, and years to come. I'm feeling very well, except for the constant nausea, sore boobs, tired everything, and the extreme need to pee every 10 minutes. I brought my pregnancy up in this manner because lately I have been struggling with the way the world is perceiving choices and abilities. I have never felt more strongly than I have now that we must stand up for what is right and not back down.

I'll keep everyone posted on the prego-ness and thanks in advance for all the well-wishes and congrats. Love to you all!

Yeah! Congrats! That will be fun to have your two kids so close together! I totally agree with you on the stance of abortion. My birth Mom was seventeen and still in high school. I am so very thankful that she didn't opt for an abortion, and that because of her decision I was able to be adopted into the wonderful family I have!

AMEN, sister! I have seen first-hand the joys that parents with disabilities go through. There are plenty of struggles, admittedly, but the get quite overshadowed by the happy times!

Congratulations on the little baby who is living and growing inside of you!

I know, i loved that article too! and congrats on #2! I loved how he said this choice is like deciding on taking a rocket into space. there is no taking it back, you're in it for the whole trip once you make the initial decision to take it. anyways, good luck with the pregnancy!

I am so excited for you! I have known for awhile though because your mom told me when I was out in Utah! Hope the nausea doesn't last too long and everything goes well for you.

Yay, yay! Congratulations. And, I wholeheartedly agree with you on the abortion issue. We did IVF for our sweet twins. I almost can't talk about abortion without a significant amount of rage. Good for you for bringing it up.

Great post Annika. You should have told that doctor that the reason more women have down syndrome kids under 35 is because there are a TON MORE WOMEN UNDER 35that have children as opposed to women over 35 having children!!! Duh. Is he dumb? Percentage wise the risks are much greater starting at age 33 and increase each year after that.

Wonderful post my dear! And CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I read that article and was about to be sick. I can't stand that whole debate. There are people like me and a friend of mine that want a baby so badly and so car can't have one and then there's all those idiots around that get rid of them GRRR! I'm so grateful for the church and their stance on these issues.
